Winter Deep Cleaning Checklist for Renters

A mid-year reset to protect your home, health, and bond.
While spring is known for big cleanouts, winter is actually the perfect time to tackle a deep clean - especially in your rental home. The colder months can bring mould, dust build-up, and blocked gutters that may impact your health, safety, and even your bond at the end of your lease.
A seasonal deep clean helps you stay on top of maintenance, avoid pest issues, and keep your living space feeling fresh and cosy during winter. From forgotten corners inside to leaf-filled gutters outside, this checklist will guide you through the most commonly overlooked (but most important) cleaning tasks every renter should do at least once a year.
It can feel like a big job, but with a bit of structure, you can tick it off room by room. Here's our eUmeco-approved checklist to make your deep clean as efficient (and satisfying) as possible.

Inside Your Rental
1. Windows, Screens & Blinds
Often missed in weekly cleans, these collect dust and grime fast - especially in Sydney’s climate. Dirty windows or blinds are a common reason for bond deductions.
Use a mix of vinegarwarm water, and dishwashing liquid with a microfibre cloth to gently scrub dirt from windows and tracks. Avoid sunny days for cleaning glass to reduce streaks.
🛠 Maintenance tip: While you’re there, check windows, locks, and doors for any signs of swelling or leaks after heavy rain. Snap a photo and notify your property manager if needed.

2. Exhaust Fans (Kitchen & Bathroom)
These can quickly fill with dust and circulate it back into your home.
Remove the fan cover with a screwdriver, then wipe the blades and casing with a damp microfibre cloth. Regular maintenance can also extend the life of your appliance.

3. Shower Doors
Water spots and soap scum build up fast. Use a quality glass cleaner, or let a shower spray sit for a few minutes before wiping for stubborn grime.
🧽 Pro tip: A non-abrasive sponge will help lift grime without scratching glass or tiles.

4. Light Fittings
Lights often gather bugs and dust - dulling the brightness over time.
If safe and accessible, remove the cover and wipe it down. If unsure, check with your property manager before attempting removal.

5. Behind the Toilet
An often forgotten zone that collects dust and hair.
Vacuum first, then spray and wipe down the area. It’s a quick job that makes a big difference in overall hygiene.

6. Inside Kitchen Cabinets
Even if they look clean on the outside, cupboards can harbour crumbs, spills and pests.
Empty contents, sweep crumbs with a handheld broom or vacuum, then wipe down with a surface spray.
🪳 Prevent pest problems by doing this every few months.

Outside Your Rental

7. Gutters
Clogged gutters can cause major issues - from water damage to increased bushfire risk.
Gutter cleaning is typically the landlord’s responsibility, but if you notice overflowing water or birds lingering on the roof, report it immediately to your property manager so a professional can be organised.

8. Leaf Litter
Especially important during the dry season, excess leaves can become a fire hazard or stain outdoor areas like decks and pavers.
A simple sweep each season can prevent bigger problems later. Use gloves and a green bin to dispose of the waste properly.

9. Preventing Pests
Keeping on top of your cleaning goes a long way in pest prevention. But during warmer months, extra precautions can help.
Pick up affordable baits or traps from your local supermarket or Bunnings and place them in discreet areas. If pests persist or were present at the start of your lease, notify your property manager.
📝 Tenant tip: If the pest issue is ongoing or existed prior to your tenancy, it may be the owner’s responsibility to resolve it. Always document your efforts.

10. Sweep & Hose Outdoor Areas
Regularly sweeping and hosing patios or balconies helps prevent grime build-up and pot stains.
🏡 Hot tip: Place plant pots on stands to avoid stains and make it easier to clean underneath.
